New faces

Marianne Tansley started in PECS Support as PLA Senior PA.  Marianne sits next to Nicole H.

Aileen Jones has joined BDO Private Wealth as a Senior Paraplanner.  Aileen is sitting next to Carolyn G.

Both ladies introduce themselves below:

Marianne Tansley
I have over 10 years administration experience across a number of industries, however this is my first time working in the taxation industry.  My last role involved working for a major engineering company in Brisbane, where I spent most of my day preparing reports and plans for government agencies so that permits and licences could be issued for work on major developments across Qld.
I’m a recent addition to Cairns, having moved up from Brisbane with my husband in August 2011.  When I’m not at work I am usually in the kitchen baking up all sorts of sweet treats or hitting the shops looking for another pair of shoes to add to my ever-growing collection.  I also love to travel, both within Australia and overseas, and will often make a weekend trip to Brisbane or Melbourne to visit family and friends, and shop some more!

Aileen Jones
My family and I have only recently moved from Bundaberg to Cairns in November last year due to my husbands’ work promotion. We have two girls, Eowyn (pronounced Air-wyn) and Tiana aged 3 and 1 respectively who have just started childcare in Edge Hill.
We were previously based in Bundaberg for 5 years where I worked in a Financial Planning office as Paraplanner in which I supported 2-3 advisers.
Prior to Bundaberg, I am from the Gold Coast and I met my husband in his home town, which is a small beachside town in Wales called, Tenby.
I am a yoga fanatic and have practiced for 11 years and would like to complete my teacher training in the future. Our family loves camping and swimming  and we try to get away as often as possible to any new location. We also all love any type of music and have guitars and drums scattered around the house that the girls like to play.

January in FOCUS

by Margaret Maunsell
Happy New Year to all at BDO, and welcome back after hopefully a relaxing and happy time spent with family and friends over the festive period. With batteries recharged we can look forward to a challenging year in difficult economic circumstances when our clients will need our help and support more than ever.

Some of you may not be aware that the Maunsell Team have been providing support and assistance to a local charity, The Far North Queensland Youth Assistance Fund for around 18 years. The fund was established 40 years ago by a group of local Cairns businessmen to raise money to assist disadvantaged youth in far North Queensland achieve their dreams. The majority of these original members are clients of this Firm and they continue to personally contribute both time and money to this worthy cause. Over this 40 year period, the members have raised in excess of $3.5million and the earnings from this capital amount are distributed throughout the year to disadvantaged youth for academic, sporting, cultural and medical costs. On Friday, 27 January, an annual civic reception will be held at Cairns Regional Council to present cheques to young people attending University. Last year in January 2011, a total of $66,600 was presented at the ceremony and it is anticipated a similar amount will be presented this year.

I have been Treasurer of this Fund for eighteen years and the BDO Maunsell team has provided regular unpaid administrative assistance mainly through Fiona Bishop who helps with BAS, tax returns and accounting and bookkeeping advice throughout the year. In addition, two committee meetings each year are hosted in our BDO board rooms. Working in a professional services firm as we all do where we are dealing with clients who in almost all cases are in a comfortable financial position, it is easy to forget that there is another side to our community. Many of these students would not be able to go to University, attend peninsula/state/national sporting competitions or have necessary medical equipment and treatment if it were not for the generosity of the Cairns community including BDO who support this Fund.
Welcome to our Vacationers!

This month we welcomed our Vacationers to the business!  For the next few weeks they will be working in their teams alongside their buddies gaining some real-life accounting experience before heading back to University to get started on their final year.

A huge welcome to you all and we hope that you enjoy being part of the BDO team!

Hin Ma (PLA Team), Regina Mauloni (EJO Team), Shaye Rankine (MAS Team) and Rohan Smith (MCD Team).

Good luck and enjoy!

Learning and Development

At the end of the month we will be launching our new learning management system (LMS) HorizOnline, which will be going live in the Cairns office on Monday 30 January 2012.

Georgia Ford, from the National Learning & Development team, will be conducting two Webex training sessions, to introduce the program, and train how to use the system.

The two sessions will be held in our boardrooms on:

  • Monday 30 January 2012 at 11am
  • Wednesday 1 February 2012 at 11am

You should have by now received and accepted a calendar invite attend the training.  If you are unable to attend either of these sessions, please advise Stacey or Courtney so that alternate arrangements can be made.

From 30 January 2012, all training bookings for local L&D, external L&D courses and national L&D programs will have to be made through HorizOnline.  HorizOnline will also house all L&D calendars, upcoming modules and individual staff training registers, therefore attending the training is very important.

Lindsay's Indian Adventure

"India was great, after Addy’s wedding, we travelled around the country for about 3 weeks and managed to see and experience the highs and lows of the country. It was a little overwhelming at first because the cities are extremely dirty and smelly. There is pollution, rubbish and people EVERYWHERE. But after a while it became normal and walking the streets was fun and always felt safe.

Just a few of the places we saw were the Taj Mahal, many beautiful forts and palaces and did a Camel Safari for a few days and ended up in Goa for New Years. (That was an extremely brief summary). Anyway, It was a great trip and I hope to go back someday."

Networking

Growing business is an essential part of any company and networking plays an important part in this. Networking is about making connections and building up long-lasting relationships, the value of forming and also maintaining a solid circle of contacts is invaluable. There are many opportunities in the community to attend networking events to start building these relationships and attending these events will also help to build your confidence and communication skills.

Networking is not just relevant externally either, internal networking is also important in order to build up relationships with your co-workers and open up the communication channels. It is all about relationships, building them up and keeping them strong. Working together is much easier than going it alone.

Our Staff in Focus

Wishing good luck to our staff enrolled in CA subjects for Term 1 2012.  Shaun has signed up for his final subject, Ethics and Business Application while Chris, Lewa, Simone, Denise and Stephanie have all enrolled in the Taxation subject.  Have Fun!

Joanne is in serious training for her Great Ocean Road ride in February.  She will be riding 300 kilometres over 4 days from Geelong to Warrnanbool to to Camperdown.  Good luck Jo!  And all great preparation for representing BDO in the Challenge Cairns 20.80.20 event in June.

The Oztag season has started up again and there are few people from the office who are taking part through different teams.  Courtney and Samantha played their first ever game last Monday night with much coaching (and patience!) on the field from Chris.  Stacey also plays alongside hubby Tahl and some of the JCU rugby crowd.  Hopefully everyone can stay injury free and have an enjoyable season.

Good luck and all the best to Karolina and Ann!

Mary G is heading down to Brisbane this week to spend some quality time baby sitting her grandchildren, saving some time to see a performance of Mary Poppins at Qld Performing Arts Centre.  Have a wonderful long weekend Mary!
