What's your passion?
Michelle Curtis
|
My passions may well be simple, but I believe it’s the simple pleasures in life that can truly be the most fulfilling.
I grew up in a small town in Victoria called Ballarat. I was the middle of 5 children to a stay-at-home mum and army dad, so we didn’t really have very much money, but being a kid, I never noticed it. It did however bring me to my passions. When I was around 6 my father built my mother what appeared to me to be the largest veggie patch I had ever seen, I remember standing under the corn and gazing up at the little cobs blowing back and forth in the wind, the little prickles I would get when helping mum collect the zucchini for that nights dinner and most of all, the beautiful fresh smell of dew on tomato plant leaves. Not only did we have veggies but mum would grow beautiful flowers and plants all year round. I still can’t do my 7 times tables, but show me a plant and I’ll probably be able to name it for you. These moments and memories are engrained in my heart.
Now all grown up and with a place of my own, my partner and I have spent most of our time and money investing into what I believe is the most important part of our home – our garden. When we brought our home 12 months ago the first items installed were the veggie patch and my 5000L water tank. I am now the very proud owner of four large veggie patches and quite a large yard in which I am filling with flowers and gardens. The wonderful thing about this passion is that not only does it relax and help me feel fulfilled – it also leads to one of my other passion, cooking. There is nothing better than walking outside, picking a bunch of beans, carrots, cucumbers or whatever else I have on a vine at the time then walking back into my kitchen to cook something yummy and wholesome for my family.
Which brings me to my most important passion. My family. As I mentioned before, we never had much growing up but I never went without. I have always had people around me that have supported and cared for me. I have learnt through the years that a family can take many shapes and forms, be it your typical mum, dad and kids, the grandparents and grandkids, aunts, uncles or even in deed just a very close friend who loves you just as unconditionally. I have been lucky enough to be blessed with a family that accepts people for who they are. I have fallen in love with a guy of Pakistani decent, my sisters have chosen Canadian, South African and Aussie boys and my brother is married to an islander girl, not to mention my two nieces who are half Greek! Yes, we are the smaller version of the United Nations. Although we all have different ideas of life and love and what is wrong or right we are all bound together with the knowledge that in life we will always have each other, and what more could you want to put your time, effort and passion into than family and close friends.
Oh, I forgot, my final passion is actually chocolate, but being allergic to it, it tends to take the bottom of the passions pile, but C'est la vie (such is life)!
